The windlass is the winch used to hoist the anchor on the schooner American Eagle. Originally launched in 1930 as a fishing vessel, the American Eagle is a Historic National Landmark that sails out of Rockland Harbor as part of Maine’s windjammer fleet. Initial sketches for this painting were done on board while under way, and the painting was done later in the studio.
This original watercolor painting is double matted with a 10 × 14-inch window in a 16 × 20 mat set. The mat and foam-core backing are made from acid-free, archival materials. The 16 × 20 frame has overall dimensions of 19 × 23 inches and the glazing is UV-blocking Conservation Clear glass.
